Birds don’t seem to be bound by the same laws of nature that we are. Forming a link between heaven and earth, conscious and unconscious, the bird is almost universally seen as a symbol for the soul. It is their song that makes them so remarkable. Their voices are thought to be the voices of our instincts and the voices of the spirit. Bird song can wake us up in the morning, calling us to our lives. ‘Song is Existence’ says Rilke…Here I have tried to capture the spirit of birds and birdsong with bright fluorescent paint to show their presence and energy, as well as painting the birds onto music score so that music is literally within them. Gold is used as a backdrop to elevate their status and hint at their divinity, just as religious paintings used to use to depict Saints and Gods….
